Our Man In Beijing

I must admit I have never heard of La Mama before but in my recent visit to Melbourne, I was brought to this place by a friend whilst we were on the way to dine at Carlton, the Italian eatery street in Melbourne.

“…La Mama is nationally and internationally acknowledged as a crucible for cutting edge, contemporary theatre in Australia. Valued by artists and audiences alike, La Mama is treasured for its continued advocacy of those seeking to explore beyond mainstream theatre; producing work by theatre makers of all backgrounds and encouraging works that explore, deconstruct and critique form, content and social issues”.

Phil Trainer, The Singer

August 25 – September 9 | Sat, Sun 4pm | La Mama Theatre

A comedy about an Australian junior manager (John Williams) sent to Beijing to get a contract settled with a Chinese

singer (Ding Mei Ling). An important client in Australia wants her to become the covergirl for the next edition of their Life-Style-Magazine. Instead of a smooth course of proceedings, John finds many cultural challenges for which he was ill-prepared to manage. The play gives some entertaining insights in the differences between the Australian and Chinese cultures.
Proceeds of this season will contribute to the production touring Kuala Lumpur in 2013.

Written and Produced by Dr Moni Lai Storz
Directed by Wolf Heidecker
Performed by Peter Muir, Diana Nguyen, David Lih, Mark Shen and Aparna Bhattacharjee
Lighting and Set Design by Richard Lyford-Pyke
Set Design by Julia DeRosayro

I really enjoyed this play. The main actor/actress Peter Muir and Diana Nguyen are both really good. However the part of the immigration officer played by Aparna is the most hilarious in my opinion. Those who are in Melbourne Australia should check this play out, especially those who are in a multi cultural relationships.

  1. Finally managed to get myself off to see ‘Our Man in Beijing’ play at La Mama! – it was brilliant! I had a good time mind matching the play back to our Mandarin Level 3 book which really is the script of ‘Our Man in Beijing’. Congratulations to the crew at the Australasian Chinese Theatre for putting on this bi-lingual play!

  2. The spouse visa scene in Our Man in Beijing with Aparna and Peter in last night’s performance was so funny, even if I (as author) may say so!!!! not to be missed i reckon..sending up the doublespeak indulged in by bureacratic staff…ah…how many of us can identify with that….

  3. Dear friends, do you want to enjoy a good belly laugh and learn a thing or 2 about Aussie and Chinese stereotype assumptions at work, play and in love? Then get along to see Our Man in Beijing at La Mama Theatre, not to be missed. Stars the talented Diana Nguyen et al directed by Wolf Heidecker and written by Moni Lai Storz
