I personally used these websites for all my travels.
Dubai Public Transport
After taking a general overall view of Dubai city via the Big Bus Company I took a trip in the local train and explore Dubai at my leisure. Certainly a better way to enjoy the various tourists’ sights. Amazingly the train system is so efficient and so much help from workers at the stations are around to assist you from the ticket seller, inspectors at the gate/ and at the train platform as well.
Dubai train system is so much better that of Australian train system. They are even better than Hong Kong and London rail system in the sense that it is so much cleaner and more efficient. Hong Kong & London railways are supposed to be not notch, but Dubai railways systems are catching up. The train arrives every 20 minutes and is on time too. Inside the train, there are not much seats but with lots of standing room. Seats are made of solid materials not of fabric. This kind of seats are much easier to keep clean and cleaner for passengers.
However for the bus, there is another card that works similar to the train. In this sense, the ticket system is not as convenient as the ones in Hong Kong or London.
Travelling by bus is much cheaper than taxi. Bus stop is spread out everywhere, especially in the prime location.
The bus is usually every 15 minutes and there is schedule in every bus stop.
The schedule will be different on Friday (but you can always check in the schedule)
Usually the bus fare is 2 to 5 Dirham, depend on the destination. Once you step in to the bus, you need to pay to the driver. Please always bring small change. It will be good if you can always bring coins with you, so you don’t need to wait for your changes.
Women usually are sitting in the front side, while men are in the backside.
You can also purchase the ticket books (and student will have reduction price).Just check in the Satwa bus station. The main bus station is in the Gold Souk. From here, you can pick any direction.
Another tip to note is whenever you go to a big shopping mall anywhere in the world, asked at information counter if they have shuttle bus to go from mall to hotels. For example in Dubai, they have a free shuttle bus to Atlantis Hotel at the Palms. I had originally intended to go there by using the public bus but with this free shuttle, a bonus….
– a medium sized ship with motor boat engine
Another form of transport is to take the Abra. This is a small open air boat that you can use to cross the creek. It’s quite exciting to step into Abra. Enjoying the breeze wind touch your face and looking to the high rise building surrounds the creek, while slowly you cruise to cross the creek.
Abra, a medium sized ship with motor boat engine, can accommodate around 10 people. If you fancy enjoying five minute crossing, you can take Abra from Baniyas street (Deira) to Creek (Bur Dubai) and vice versa. The cost is about one dirham per person. You just pay when you board the Abra. I tried it and it is worth the experience!
Unless I have no choice, I didn’t take the taxi except to and from the airport.
Taxi charges are approximately the following:-
Pick-up fee 3 Dirham (night time 3,50 Dirham) and then 1,25 Dirham/km.
Airport has special pick-up fee of 20 Dirham and then 1,25 Dirham/km
